The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent honors show nears, one notices a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
